Many of the decisions we make about what we eat and drink are subconscious. Be it the cookies it is so easy to pick up at the same time as the TV remote or the cracker to nibble on while making dinner…it can feel like your brain was offline at the time and just took you on autopilot to put those things in your mouth and in a way, it really did!
To help us make better choices, it can be helpful to REMIND our brain of our goals and bring these decisions back into our CONSCIOUS awareness. This is the start of changing an unhelpful habit into a more useful one!
Want to drink more water? Put a note on your lunch box, fill water bottles up every night just before you go to bed, so they are there in the front of the fridge for the morning ready to go.
Want to eat more veg and nibble less on crackers and chips? Chop up extra veggies every few nights when you are making dinner and put them in a container at the front of the fridge, so they are the first thing you see and REMIND you of your goal. Also, make those chippies and crackers MUCH harder to see or reach.
Want to workout more? Get your clothes out the night before and put them at the end of your bed.
Alarms are something I use as a reminder of my goals too. I have an alarm at 5.25am which says it is ‘Workout time – it will make you feel better today’, one at 11am to remind me to get water and one at 8.40pm that prompts me to plan my workout for the next morning and what I will eat the next day!
These visual cues I also use in my day to day life so I don’t forget to do things… like the pegs, I put these on the kitchen bench every time I put washing in the machine so I don’t forget about it. And, when I need to remember to put the dishwasher on before bed, I leave the powder out!!
