Prevent & Navigate Disordered Eating Masterclass

 

This Masterclass is for parents and caregivers who are worried about the way their pre-teens and teens are eating. Disordered eating and body image concerns are becoming more and more common in this age group and the problems that come as a result of this can come in many forms and vary in severity.  

From restricting food to binge eating, hiding food and compensatory behaviours like excessive exercise, vomiting and laxative abuse, we know this is a really hard thing to manage as a parent or caregiver.  

Whether you are concerned about this being an issue in the future for your teen, starting to see warning signs or trying to manage disordered eating that has already set in, this Masterclass will help you. 

  • Disordered eating sits on a spectrum between normal eating and an eating disorder and may include symptoms and behaviours of eating disorders, but at a lesser frequency or lower level of severity. Disordered eating may include restrictive eating, compulsive eating, or irregular or inflexible eating patterns. Dieting is one of the most common forms of disordered eating.

    Other behaviours that may be present in a person engaging in disordered eating include:

    • Fasting

    • Binge eating

    • Skipping meals

    • Avoiding a type of food or food group

    • Self-induced vomiting

    • Laxative, diuretic, enema misuse

    • Steroid and creatine use

    • Using diet pills

    Eating disorders are serious, complex and potentially life-threatening mental illnesses. They are characterised by disturbances in behaviours, thoughts and feelings towards body weight and shape, and/or food and eating.

    Eating disorders do not discriminate and can occur in people of any age, weight, size, shape, gender identity, sexuality, cultural background or socioeconomic group.

    Eating disorders include:

    • Binge eating disorder (BED)

    • Other specified feeding or eating disorders (OSFED)

    • Bulimia nervosa 

    • Anorexia nervosa 

    • Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID)

    • Unspecified feeding or eating disorder (UFED)

    • Pica

    • Rumination disorder

Claire Turnbull

Claire Turnbull BSc (Hons) Dietetics, NZ Registered Nutritionist, Dip Positive Psychology

Claire has a history of disordered eating that spanned over 20 years. From extreme fussy eating in childhood and then following many ‘diets’ in her teens, she developed anorexia and then bulimia which continued into her 30s. When it comes to understanding the challenges of managing your relationship with food and how to overcome disordered eating, Claire really gets it with her first-hand experience.

 
 

Amy Judd NZ Registered Dietitian

Amy is an incredible Dietitian with a wealth of knowledge and experience in the area of disordered eating, eating disorders, and supporting people to create a healthier relationship with food. She has been working in the nutrition space for over 14 years, including roles in health promotion for young people. She has been supporting clients at Mission Nutrition, as well as working as an Eating Disorder Specialist in the public health system.

It’s been a hell of a few years with all that’s been going on in the world and it’s easy for stress to take over and play havoc with your eating! I battled with food for the first 20+ years of my life. I dieted, starved myself, binged, purged, threw food away, binged some more and destroyed myself in the process. It nearly ended my life.

Through a lot of study, therapy and self-development work I have managed to get myself out of that pit of despair and create a healthier relationship with food and myself. I don’t worry about food controlling my life anymore. I can now have chocolate in the pantry without it calling my name, drink alcohol without feeling the need to binge, and I very rarely emotionally eat or drink any more.
